Travelling from Digha to Kolkata

Digha is one of the most popular sea resorts in West Bengal. Known as the -Brighton of the East’, Digha is located at a distance of about 187 kms away from Kolkata. Named Beerkul in the early days, Digha offers shallow, calm and safe beaches fit for swimming. Digha beach offer excellent view of both sunrise and sunset.

Reaching Kolkata from Digha is fairly easy as both the cities are well connected by both road and rail. Regular bus services from Digha are available to the Garia Bus Terminus (Route 6) of Kolkata. The bus service starts as early as 4 am and goes on till the afternoon. Bus service is frequent and it takes about 4 to 5 hours to reach Kolkata from Digha. Buses are available from Digha to Kolkata to the Dharamtala bus stand also. There are frequent bus services from Digha to Esplanade/ Babughat bus stand. AC Volvo bus to Kolkata – from Digha departs at 7.00 am to Esplanade and the fare is around INR 300/- for a ticket.

Apart from this, there are two daily bus services to Kudghat Bus Stand daily at 6 and 8.30am. Bus service from Digha is also available to Dumdum station. The bus leaves at 7am from Digha to Dumdum. CSTC buses are available to the bus stand near Ruby General Hospital. They start at 4.30am and 4.45am every day. Bus service to Barrackpore is at 6am and 7.30am. Frequent bus services are available to Howrah with buses leaving at an interval of 30 minutes throughout the day.It was in 2004 that train services started to and from Digha to Kolkata. The Howrah – Digha Superfast Tamralipta Express (12857) departs to Howrah from Digha station. The Howrah – Digha Kandari Express (18001) departs to Howrah from Digha station daily. New Jalpaiguri – Digha Paharia Express (15722) leaves to New Jalpaiguri station on each day and halts at Howrah. It starts from Digha and reached Howrah the next day.

The train runs from New Japlaiguri on Friday. Santragachhi – Digha Passenger departs from Santragachhi also connects both the cities with each other. The Howrah – Duranto Express, a special AC train for tourists, departs to Howrah station from Digha without any stoppage in between. There is also a Local train to Shalimar (Near Howrah) from Digha. Special trains are also announced from time to time, especially during holidays and festivals. It is also possible to book train tickets online through the web site of Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).Hiring a cab from Digha to Kolkata is another option of travel between the places. Cab cost varies from `8 to `25 per kilometer, depending upon the type of car one prefers.
